Laptops have completely wiped out the market of traditional bulky desktops with their added mobility features and that too within affordable prices. As most of the companies today continue to manufacture high performance laptops, even the category of budget laptops with basic specs to meet everyday computing requirements continues to flourish day by day. Addressing the same segment, Gateway has come up with a new product which holds enough capabilities to meet the demands of normal programs without burning a hole in the pockets of the users. While most of the devices under this category are either available as netbooks, or hybrids, this one is a full sized laptop which can be an efficient desktop replacement option for the users.
Gateway Ne72206u is certain not one of the most mobile options available in the market with a big display of 17.3 inches and heavy weight of seven pounds. The physical dimensions measure 16.3 X 10.8 X 1.4 inches. The screen packs a resolution of 1600 X 900p which is not as good as full HD 1920 X 1080p but still feels better than normal low priced 1366 X 768p displays. The display lacks touch but supports 720p video playback.
The big size has allowed the company to place a separate dedicate numeric pad on the right side of keyboard. The chiclet styled keys feel sturdy and lack backlight making it difficult to type under low light conditions. The touchpad supports normal Windows 8 features like pinching, zooming, scrolling, etc. Optical drive along with 2 USB 2.0 ports and audio and mic jacks are located on the right side. The left side comprises of one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, HDMI, VGA, and Ethernet port. There’s a dedicated SD card slot on the front side. Wireless connectivity options include Bluetooth v4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/ g/ n.
The laptop packs an AMD A6 processor clocked at 2 GHz to look after processing stuff. The quad core AMD can effectively compete with a dual core Intel core i3 processor. The embedded AMD Radeon HD 8400 chip looks after the graphical processing without compromising with the battery life. The big 6 cell battery can provide a backup of more than 5 hours and 20 minutes with one full charge owing to the low hardware specs being offered.
The overall design of the laptop has been kept plain with silver lid carrying the company logo on the right side and black internal layout. The points which favor the device include a low price tag of $499, good processing abilities given the price point, good battery life as compared to other competitors like Dell Inspiron 15, dedicated optical drive with tray, etc. The negative points include low graphic processing unit, degraded audio quality with no bass effects, and a lower resolution display given the big 17.3 inch size. This device is certainly a complete desktop replacement option for the users at affordable prices, but the buyer would have to be satisfied with mediocre hardware and low specs.
